They’re smaller, lighter, and far more accurate than a mechanical speedometer. I tried several brands over the years, but have found an older Trek Sensor model to be the best. It has a regular and a trip odometer, with an understandable display. Best yet, it’s fairly intuitive to program and reset. This made it impossible to reset the trip odometer to zero miles, as well as allow me to change the display to the various functions. To my horror, when I tried to program any of the other speedos, I found that none of the buttons would work on any of the units. It turned out that the designers made their own switches by taping a Belleville washer cupped spring over gold-plated pads on the printed circuit board (PCB). After a decade or two, the adhesive from the tape had leached under the washers and prevented electrical contact. I could understand this happening on the units mounted on my motorcycles, since they were in my hot Florida garage for a few years. Yet even the spare units that had been inside the house had this same failure mode. I once worked for a Palm Pilot accessory startup. They disliked the terms of the contract for the docking connector. The company asked that we limit any order to less than 45,000 per month. Heck, we never sold 100 of them, as the project eventually failed. I convinced him that contact design is not trivial and takes long experience and lots of testing. Thankfully, I prevailed and we just bought the real docking connector from the reputable manufacturer. This speedometer is a case in point. I tore down one unit, and was delighted to find I could fix the switches with solvent and Scotch tape, as seen below. I fixed all six spare units, and have them in reserve to replace any bad speedometers on my motorcycles. They came in opaque and clear cases. The very early model was called a Trek Sonic. You mount a magnet on the wheel and the speedo senses each full revolution. By programming in the circumference of the wheel in centimeters, you get a very accurate speedometer. There’s an O-ring on the top half that provides water resistance. The problematic switches are the two silver domes on the gold-plated pads on the PCB. You can just make out the little squares of clear tape holding the domes to the circuit board. Above the top case-half is the black plastic placard that has the logo and model name. To the right is the LCD module, with a plastic holder and zebra-strip contacts to mate with the PCB. At the bottom is the rubber pushbutton surface and two black plastic retainers. The contacts for the magnetic sensor are directly attached to the PCB. The large capacitor provides hold-up, so if you change the battery swiftly, you won’t lose the programming. This particular unit was the only one with green corrosion on the center battery terminal. I cleaned it with a small wire brush and applied DeoxIT contact treatment. The microcontroller is a chip-on-board (COB) unit, with the watch crystal at the top left along with a handful of capacitors as well as one resistor. Then I put a small drop of DeoxIT Gold on the gold PCB pads. I re-secured the domes with plain old Scotch tape. All six units worked perfectly after this procedure. That’s one of the things I love about the Trek Sensor—you can program in the odometer setting after a reset or battery failure so that you don’t have to start at zero every time. I connected the magnetic sensor and waved the wheel magnet near it to verify the speedometer was working. I used a Dykem white paint marker to mark the back of the units as I fixed them. The Goof Off and DeoxIT did the work, but I needed Q-tips to scrub and apply them. An X-acto knife and scissors cut the Scotch tape. Tweezers were essential to peel the old tape off, as well as position the domes and new tape. I used the knife to pry the case-halves apart. I tried the eraser pen to clean the gold contacts, but it wasn’t really needed. The safety glasses protect your eyes any time you have spray cans. No matter how careful you are, they always spritz in your eye. The speedometer manual specified an alkaline L43 battery cell. That cell has 55-mAh capacity. The cross-reference chart shows the silver-oxide SR43W to be the exact same size, but with a capacity of 125 mAh, more than twice the LR43. I found a 5-pack on Amazon in the equivalent 386 size; much cheaper than the 4 bucks each they wanted at the drug store. Heck, I only paid 10 bucks for most of the speedometers on eBay. How do non-idealities of a sine wave affect ADC linearity while testing it. Testing an ADC’s linearity. To obtain the transfer function of an analog-to-digital converter (ADC), it’s intuitive to feed a ramp signal and observe the ADC output code as shown in Figure 1. But the greater the resolution and precision of the ADC, the more complex it becomes to generate the ramp signal. 1. The transfer function of an ADC can be obtained by giving a ramp signal to the ADC, which is generated by incrementing voltage. This means that the ramp signal should be stepped at 0.0625LSB; thus, the resolution of the ramp-signal generator should be 22 bits. However, this is severely limited by the DAC chosen for the ramp generation. And when considering the DAC’s nonlinearity, this doesn’t seem like a practical solution. On the other hand, sine waves can be easily generated, and their purity can be worked on to meet the ADC’s performance. Moreover, the DAC throughput would decide the linearity test time. Thus, sine waves are the first choice for obtaining the transfer function of an ADC. Also, calculating the transfer function from sine waves isn’t as straightforward as the ramp signal, which is discussed further down. Consider a low-frequency sine wave as shown Figure 1. The frequency is so low that most of the time, the ADC consecutively captures the same code. Therefore, it can be said that most of the codes are hit more than once, or hits per code is greater than 1. As Figure 2 shows, hits for all codes aren’t uniform. At the mid-risings, the slope of the sine wave is higher, so those codes aren’t hit as frequently. At the peaks (top and bottom peaks), the slope of the sine wave is lower, so those codes are more likely to be hit. Consequently, “hits per code” is lesser at the mid-risings and more at the top and bottom peaks. 2. A sine wave can’t be uniformly traversed throughout; some sections are closely captured, resulting in the same code multiple times while other sections are captured far apart. The plot of “hits per code” versus codes is as shown in Figure 3. This is famously referred to as the “bathtub” shape. 3. This histogram shows the number of hits of the sine wave across ADC codes. It’s famously referred to as the “bathtub” shape. To obtain the transfer function of the ADC from the sine-wave data, let’s consider the scenario where the minimum “hits per code” is 1 from one sine-wave cycle. It’s easier to scale if we calculate for minimum “hits per code” of 1 from one sine-wave cycle. The resolution and throughput of the ADC is fixed as these are device-dependent. The frequency of the sine wave can be varied to hit all of the codes at least once. We need to target the mid-code to be hit only once to achieve minimum hits per code equal to 1—it’s the least probable code to be hit in the entire range of codes. So, this setup would ensure that the mid-code is hit only once in the sine-wave cycle. 4. The time period of the input sine wave needs to be calculated to ensure that the ADC captures every code at least once. This figure shows how to consider different points on the sine wave for the calculation. As a result, the frequency and number of samples are scalable with hits per code. Let’s consider an example to get a better idea of the above calculations. The linearity measurement can be more accurate with higher hits per code. The number of samples required would usually be a bit higher than the number calculated. Now that we have captured all of the codes from one sine-wave cycle, code width has to be calculated to obtain differential linearity (DNL) and INL. To calculate the code width, we need to calculate the transition points from the data we have. In the case of the ramp signal, the hits per each code were used to calculate the transition points. Here, too, the hits per each code can be used but the hits per each code are non-uniform in the case of sine wave unlike the case of ramp signal. Yet, the “hits per code” gives us the time difference between the transition points on a sine wave. The code width is being measured in LSBs; thus, DNL is also in LSB units. The 1 LSB used in the calculation isn’t the accurate value of 1 LSB, which depends on the ADC’s reference voltage. Hence, this doesn’t involve the gain error component in the transfer function. The offset error of the ADC also doesn’t factor in the above calculations, because there’s no mapping of input voltages to output codes. Thus, the transfer function obtained from the above method doesn’t include gain error and offset error of the system. Figure 5 depicts the accumulated histogram per code versus codes. 5. Accumulated hits across codes are plotted. However, two concerns arise with this method: Flicker noise Not many sine-wave sources are good at generating a pure sine wave of such low frequencies In Figure 6, we see that the presence of a lower frequency tone along with a sine wave of low-frequency fundamental can affect the histogram. Flicker noise is unavoidable in electronic systems, so there’s a need for a method that can deal with it differently. 6. This diagram shows the effect of the flicker-noise component riding atop one cycle of a low-frequency fundamental on the linearity measurement. Instead of considering one sine-wave cycle, more sine-wave cycles can be used to reduce the effect of flicker noise (Fig. 7). Because the same code will likely hit in more than one sine-wave cycle with a different proportion of flicker noise at those points, the histogram of the complete dataset seems to be less affected. The hits per code can be increased to reduce the effect of noise. Therefore, having more sine-wave cycles helps us combat the disadvantages of flicker noise. 7. With multiple cycles of the fundamental, the flicker-noise component across different hits can be cancelled out. Due to inherent flicker noise in most of the electronic systems, it’s also difficult for signal generators to generate a pure sinusoidal of such low frequencies. Thus, we can break up one low-frequency sine-wave cycle into many sine-wave cycles of higher frequency. This will help us overcome the flicker noise with the same number of samples to be captured and hence the same test time. Figure 8 shows that the effect of flicker noise can be evened out when using 128 cycles. In addition, it’s practical to obtain considerably pure sinusoidal of 1.2434-kHz frequency. (Please note that we have only depicted one flicker-noise component in the above figures for ease. In practice, there will be multiple noise components.) 8. A high frequency for the fundamental would ensure that multiple cycles need to be considered for the desired minimum hits per code, indirectly helping to cancel the flicker-noise components across different time instances. Impact of Harmonics on INL Measurement This section looks at the impact of harmonics in the input sine wave. This would show up as nonlinearity at the output of the ADC—it’s not possible to separate out the input sine-wave linearity and ADC linearity. Hence, it’s important to reduce the nonlinearity of the input sine wave as much as possible. Also, it’s observed that the impact of harmonics on the ADC output varies with phase difference of the harmonics with respect to the fundamental. How does the phase difference of the harmonics cause different results in the linearity computation. To illustrate the difference in the linearity computation, consider a second harmonic present in the input sine wave. This clearly occurs at all points of the sine wave, resulting in a histogram that’s equal to the histogram of an ideal sine wave without any impurities. Figure 11 depicts the variation of INL with respect to the phase difference of even harmonics with respect to the fundamental. 11. Figure 12 reveals the variation of INL with respect to the phase difference of odd harmonics with respect to the fundamental. 12. Since the harmonics aren’t intentional in the signal, it’s difficult and impractical to control the phase difference of the harmonics. Only the accurate knowledge of all harmonics and their phase with respect to the fundamental would enable us to obtain the ADC linearity separately from the signal-chain linearity. The yachts should be insured by the owners themselves. When they create a rental offer on Airynb site they should have an insurance policy.
Please check with the boat owner if he/she has signed an insurance policy.

Theoretically, the boat owner or the skipper are the only captains on board. Although, with their authorization and if you are on a sailboat, they may authorize you to steer the yacht. If you are on a motorboat, and if you are a boat license holder, you may steer the yacht if the skipper allows you to.

Rental Request

You will be always able to contact the boat owner through the "send message" button in the rental offer of the boat owner. You click on it and then you access to the Airynb contact form. Please fill in the form and send message.

You may always ask the boat owner for a discount or a personalized offer sending a message from "send message" button that is in every rental offer and filling in the contact form.

You can see the yacht according to the boat owner rules. You will then be able to exchange contact information with the owner and visit the yacht. The Airynb contact form allows you to ask all your questions, and is also accessible via mobile site.

A rental offer "without skipper" is a charter where you get the yacht alone: you will be steering it. Do not forget to specify your nautical experience and add your yacht license, in some cases, to reassure the boat owner. You will be responsible of the yacht during the entire length of the charter.

A rental offer "with skipper" is a charter with a professional skipper or the boat owner on board. They will be with you during your charter and will be in charge of steering the yacht.

A rental offer "with or without skipper" means that the yacht is available for charter with or without a skipper, both options are possible. It depends on your preference, and your nautical experience.

The pricing of rental offer have to be lower to the pricing displayed on your website or in your agency/office.

Your company or website may not be mentioned at any time: not in the description, not in your photos, and not in the exchange of messages with potential boat renters.

If you make your yacht available for charter with you or a qualified person on board, the charter will be considered to be "with skipper".

If you make your yacht available for charter without skipper, the boat renter will be responsible for steering the yacht.

You may also make your yacht available for charter "with or without skipper," letting the renter choose if he wants to have a skipper on board or not (depending on the renter's preference and navigational experience.

I remember you the simple steps to create a boat rental offer:

1. Register you account as boat owner on Airynb site.

2. Register your boats on Airynb site

3. Insert a boat rental offer for every boat with calendar and price.

Boat renter communicate with you through "send message" button in the rental offer filling in the Airynb contact form. Remenber that you deal directly with the future boat renter.

You will pay a token for every day that your rental offer will be present in Airynb site. The value of the token depends from the number of your boat's feet.

When the boat renter will accept your boat rental offer you will delete the rental offer for that period on Airynb site. From that moment you will not pay more.

Airynb will notify you well in advance when the token payment will be active. From now until then you will pay nothing to enter your boat rental offers.

Charter Request

To offer a discount or make a personalized offer to a boat renter, you can do it directly dealing with the boat renter.

You will be able to share contact information, email and phone numbers with the boat renter.
The first time will be when the boat renter will send you a message via the Airynb contact form by replying to one of your boat rental offers.
When you will receive your message you will be in contact with the boat renter and from that moment you can exchange email and phone numbers.
