Thus we begin the study of linear algebra with the treatment of matrices as mere arrays of numbers that arise naturally in the solution of systems of linear equations, a problem already familiar to the student. Much attention has been devoted from one edition to the next to refining and improving the pedagogical aspects of the exposition. Abstract concepts are presented along with the many computational and geometrical aspects of the subject. New to this edition is Appendix C, Introduction to Proofs, which can be used to give the student a quick introduction to the foundations of proofs in mathematics. An expanded version of this material appears in Chapter 0 of the Student Solutions Manual. MATERIAL COVERED In using this book, for a one-quarter linear algebra course meeting four times a week, no difficulty has been encountered in getting up to and including eigenvalues and eigenvectors, omitting the optional material. Varying the amount of time spent on the theoretical material can readily change the level and pace of the course. Thus, the book can be used to teach a number of different types of courses. Chapter 1 deals with matrices and their properties. In this chapter we also provide an early introduction to matrix transformations (setting the stage for linear transformations) and an application of the dot product to statistics. Methods for solving systems of linear equations are discussed in Chapter 2. In Chapter 3, we come to a more abstract notion, real vector spaces. Here we tap some of the many geometric ideas that arise naturally. Thus we prove that an n -dimensional, real vector space is isomorphic to R n, the vector space of all ordered n -tuples of real numbers, or the vector space of all n x 1 matrices with real entries. Since R n is but a slight generalization of R 2 and R 3, two- and three-dimensional space are discussed at the beginning of the chapter. This shows that the notion of a finite-dimensional, real vector space is not as remote as it may have seemed when first introduced. Chapter 4 covers inner product spaces and has a strong geometric orientation. Chapter 5 deals with matrices and linear transformations; here we consider the dimension theorems and also applications to the solution of systems of linear equations. Chapter 6 introduces the basic properties of determinants and some of their applications. Chapter 7 considers eigenvalues and eigenvectors, real quadratic forms, and some applications. In this chapter we completely solve the diagonalization problem for symmetric matrices. Section 7.9, Dominant Eigenvalue and Principal Component Analysis, new to this edition, highlights some very useful results in linear algebra. Chapter 8 provides an introduction to the application of linear algebra to the solution of differential equations. It is possible to go from Section 7.2 directly to Section 8.1, showing an immediate application of the material in Section 7.2. Section 8.2, Dynamical Systems, gives an application of linear algebra to an important area of applied mathematics. Chapter 9, MATLAB for Linear Algebra, provides an introduction to MATLAB. Chapter 10, MATLAB Exercises, consists of 147 exercises that are designed to be solved using MATLAB. Appendix A reviews some very basic material dealing with sets and functions. It can be consulted at any time as needed. Appendix B introduces in a brief but thorough manner complex numbers and their use in linear algebra. Elijah D 1.0 out of 5 stars I'm using this as a text for an undergrad linear algebra course and I'm completely appalled at the quality. I understand where the other reviewers are coming from. The explanations are almost non-existent. The book even managed to confuse me on topics I thought I already knew. If you have this book as your text for a class, all I can say is I feel your pain.The result is that linear algebra seems both hard and boring. Linear algebra is such a vast subject that has so many creative applications both in the real world and in various branches of abstract mathematics. Instead of including such applications, this book sticks to a very narrow set of concrete examples (concrete in the sense of problems involving matrices). Proofs and mathematical rigor are present but are not emphasized. If you're teaching people who are to become mathematicians, this book is a poor choice because it is so computationally oriented. But for people who are not going on in mathematics, the lack of any sort of motivation for the material or even mention of real-world applications will be painful. To make it even worse, this book does little to prepare the reader for working with the algorithms of numerical linear algebra that come up in doing linear regression, smooth optimization, or other practical settings. In the real world, people generally use computers to do linear algebra, and when they work by hand, they do in a clean, abstract setting, in order to obtain proofs of theoretical results. This book emphasizes doing computations by hand, but it explores neither the elegant abstract approach of abstract linear algebra nor the practical algorithmic approach of numerical linear algebra. I learned linear algebra from this book and hated the subject until I learned from professors and other books what a wonderful subject it is. Since then I have used linear algebra in applied settings such as computer graphics and ecology, in fitting of linear regression models, in algorithms for smooth optimization, and also in numerous abstract branches of mathematics; I wish I could have had a less painful and more inspirational exposure to the subject than that that was offered to me by this textbook. What are better books. For a clean, simple, abstract approach, take the book by Axler. For a more comprehensive, deeper, but perhaps old-fashioned approach, take the book by Shilov, or on a more advanced level, the book by Gelfand. These books, however, are all more advanced. I have not yet found an elementary linear algebra book that I really like. Perhaps I will have to write one some day. But I want to add that this book, and most like it, are so bad that students would probably be better off going right to one of the more advanced texts.If you want to read some theorems and do some proofs in linear algebra, then I highly reccommend this book. I used it in an undergad.I read the first 3 chapters and the chapter on determinants, and I have no big complaints. However, if you are going to use this book for a one semester course in linear algebra, then i'll warn you that it is hard to cover all the material in one semester, and you will probably have to read 3 or more important chapters on your own, but you can learn from this book on your own easily with a little patience and desire for proof writing. Although the book is not an applied version, you will learn about many applications throughout the text. Overall, I recommend this text, and for physics majors, you may want to check out Applied Linear Algebra, The Decoupling Principle by Lorenzo A. Sadun. Also, a student solutions manual is availabe for this book, which you will find helpful if you have never read a mathematical proofs text before.It is very poor and would not recommend it under any circumstances. I tend to learn well from reading math as opposed to lectures but I did not find this book useful. The explanations were simply poor and there is not other way to describe it. There was no example, the authors had simply wasted a line pointing to an exercise later in the text. I took this course because Linear Algebra is useful subject and is necessary to understand topics I would like to study later. After taking a course using this book, I still think the subject is useful but I am no better prepared to use it.He wrote a very basic linear algebra text book for beginners and yet made his explanations so unclear that the book ends up being hard to read. The topics are the very basics of linear algebra: no canonical forms, no infinite dimensional spaces, the underlying field is always R or C, and everything is done in terms of matrices. The explanations of the concepts that are covered could use some coherence and a dash of order. I wouldn't recommend this book for anyone. It's pretty much garbage.It's nice because it covers a lot of topics, but it has one weakness: the explanations are very poorly written, and from a student's perspective, they are very difficult to understand. All explanations of the various subjects are accurate, but they seem to be written from a viewpoint which seems to be geared towards not students but those who have already understood the material. Most of my friends taking the same course also felt that this textbook was extremely lacking. Please, if you're a professor, do your students a favour and choose a different algebra textbook than this one!!!The content in the chapters is very vauge and I'd hazard to guess makes sense only to those who already know linear algebra. This book may perhaps be a good refresher book, but as a beginning text it fails miserably. Rental management

On the day of your renting, you should bring the contract, your boat license, an official ID so the boat owner can verify all the information.

You should check the yacht description to see if the yacht owner gave any precision on fuel pricing.

Most of the time, especially for motorboats, you can consider the fuel is not included and you pay to the boat owner. Usually, you take the yacht with a certain amount of fuel, and return it with the same quantity. For more precise details, you can directly contact the boat owner.

For most renting with a skipper, the skipper service fees are included in the price. If they are not, the owner will specify this in the listing.

For a renting with or without a skipper, do not hesitate to ask questions to the yacht owner by sending a message through the Airynb site. He/she can give you more details on the charter.

The yachts should be insured by the owners themselves. When they create a rental offer on Airynb site they should have an insurance policy.
Please check with the boat owner if he/she has signed an insurance policy.

Theoretically, the boat owner or the skipper are the only captains on board. Although, with their authorization and if you are on a sailboat, they may authorize you to steer the yacht. If you are on a motorboat, and if you are a boat license holder, you may steer the yacht if the skipper allows you to.

Rental Request

You will be always able to contact the boat owner through the "send message" button in the rental offer of the boat owner. You click on it and then you access to the Airynb contact form. Please fill in the form and send message.

You may always ask the boat owner for a discount or a personalized offer sending a message from "send message" button that is in every rental offer and filling in the contact form.

You can see the yacht according to the boat owner rules. You will then be able to exchange contact information with the owner and visit the yacht. The Airynb contact form allows you to ask all your questions, and is also accessible via mobile site.

A rental offer "without skipper" is a charter where you get the yacht alone: you will be steering it. Do not forget to specify your nautical experience and add your yacht license, in some cases, to reassure the boat owner. You will be responsible of the yacht during the entire length of the charter.

A rental offer "with skipper" is a charter with a professional skipper or the boat owner on board. They will be with you during your charter and will be in charge of steering the yacht.

A rental offer "with or without skipper" means that the yacht is available for charter with or without a skipper, both options are possible. It depends on your preference, and your nautical experience.

The yachts should be insured by the owners themselves. Please check directly with the boat owner what type of insurance they have. You can send a message by clicking on the "send message" button contained in the rental offer and filling in the contact form.

You do not pay Airynb. You directly pay the boat owner.

During registration, you should receive a confirmation email on the email address you used to register. To validate your email, you simply have to click on the link "Confirm my email address". To verify that you entered the correct email address, go to "My Account" and "Profile".

To go to your phone number, you should click on "My Account", "Dashboard", "My Profile", and validate both your phone number and your email address.

After clicking on the verification process, you should automatically receive a text message with a code. You need to enter this code in the space provided for it, so your phone may be verified.

If you have forgotten your password, you can click on "Access", than on "request new password".

If your account was blocked, you can contact us by Airynb contact form. Do not forget to explain the context if possible. For example, you may have entered your password wrong 5 times, or you may not know why your account was blocked.

Create an ad

We do accept yacht charter professionals if those two conditions are respected:

The pricing of rental offer have to be lower to the pricing displayed on your website or in your agency/office.

Your company or website may not be mentioned at any time: not in the description, not in your photos, and not in the exchange of messages with potential boat renters.

If you make your yacht available for charter with you or a qualified person on board, the charter will be considered to be "with skipper".

If you make your yacht available for charter without skipper, the boat renter will be responsible for steering the yacht.

You may also make your yacht available for charter "with or without skipper," letting the renter choose if he wants to have a skipper on board or not (depending on the renter's preference and navigational experience.

I remember you the simple steps to create a boat rental offer:

1. Register you account as boat owner on Airynb site.

2. Register your boats on Airynb site

3. Insert a boat rental offer for every boat with calendar and price.

Boat renter communicate with you through "send message" button in the rental offer filling in the Airynb contact form. Remenber that you deal directly with the future boat renter.

You will pay a token for every day that your rental offer will be present in Airynb site. The value of the token depends from the number of your boat's feet.

When the boat renter will accept your boat rental offer you will delete the rental offer for that period on Airynb site. From that moment you will not pay more.

Airynb will notify you well in advance when the token payment will be active. From now until then you will pay nothing to enter your boat rental offers.

Charter Request

To offer a discount or make a personalized offer to a boat renter, you can do it directly dealing with the boat renter.

You will be able to share contact information, email and phone numbers with the boat renter.
The first time will be when the boat renter will send you a message via the Airynb contact form by replying to one of your boat rental offers.
When you will receive your message you will be in contact with the boat renter and from that moment you can exchange email and phone numbers.

You have to register on Airynb site. You click on "access", click on "create account" and fill in all the information.

You will receive an email to the communicated email in the registration, click on the URL and from that moment you are registered on Airynb site.
